Sustainability and Raw Materials Policy
In the work area “Sustainability and Raw Materials Policy”, we pursue the overall goal of playing a leading role in the European and international discourse on the sustainable use of mineral resources. In doing so, we not only strive to make scientifically sound contributions, but also to actively participate in the design and implementation of political measures that support the transition to a CO2-neutral economy.
A central focus of our work is on analyzing and evaluating the role of mineral resources in the context of sustainability. We investigate how these resources can be mined and used in a responsible manner to minimize the environmental and social impacts of mining. This includes detailed studies on the environmental and socio-economic impacts of mining, where we address issues such as land use, water consumption, biodiversity and social aspects such as local acceptance of mining projects.
Another key element of our work is policy on critical raw materials. In close cooperation with European institutions and industrial consortia, we analyze the availability and security of supply of raw materials that are essential for future technologies, such as renewable energies and electromobility. We support political decision-makers in developing strategies that ensure a sustainable and stable supply of raw materials.
Our team is actively involved in a large number of EU-funded research projects dealing with these topics. In cooperation with other scientific institutes and industrial partners, we develop practical tools and methods that help industry achieve sustainability goals. These include life cycle analyses, which assess the ecological impact of a product from raw material extraction to disposal, as well as comprehensive sustainability assessments that cover the entire value chain.
Through our work, we help ensure that mining not only meets today's demand for mineral resources, but also does so in a way that is in line with global sustainability goals. We promote a responsible raw materials policy that maintains the balance between economic interests, environmental compatibility and social justice.
