Mission Statement

Our Vision

At the Chair of Mining Engineering, Mineral Processing, and Mining Economics at Montanuniversität Leoben, we pursue a clear vision: To be a globally recognized leader in shaping the mining industry of the 21st century. Our goal is to significantly contribute to the future of resource extraction through innovative and sustainable technologies.

Strategic Direction

To address the challenges of climate change and the increasing competition for resources, we have comprehensively updated our research and teaching strategies. Our focus includes:

  • Sustainability and Raw Materials Policy: Sustainability is at the core of our research. We aim to play an active role in the raw materials policy discourse and are committed to responsible sourcing and utilization of mineral resources.
  • Digitalization and Innovation: Digitalization is a key component of our work. We develop new sensors and technologies to make mining processes more efficient and safer. Our goal is to enable comprehensive evaluation and optimization of mining processes through the use of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence.
  • Underground Mining and Rock Mechanics: We focus on advancing mining methods and researching geotechnical issues to enhance safety and efficiency in underground mining.
  • Surface Mining and Mining Planning: Our expertise in planning and executing surface mining projects is continuously expanding. Research priorities include process optimization and minimizing environmental impacts.
  • Conveying Technology and Geoinformatics: Innovative solutions in conveying technology and the application of state-of-the-art geoinformation systems are key areas of our research. We work on developing efficient conveying methods and utilizing remote sensing data in mining.

Education and Training

Our teaching aims to optimally prepare students for the challenges of the modern mining industry. We emphasize a practical engineering education, complemented by specialized content in digitalization, sustainability, and resource efficiency. We offer numerous opportunities for lifelong learning and strive for high quality and applicability of our education in practice.

Cooperations and Networks

We maintain close collaborations with national and international partners from industry, academia, and politics. These networks enable us to stay at the forefront of research and jointly develop solutions for global challenges.

Future Orientation

Our chair is geared towards future-proofing research and teaching. We view the transformations in resource extraction as an opportunity to continuously evolve our strategies and make a significant contribution to the sustainable development of the mining industry.
