History of the former Chair of Conveying Technology and Engineering Design

1875
Prof. Julius Ritter von Hauer
The history of the Institute for Mining Technology can be traced back to 1875. At the former Imperial and Royal Mining Academy, Prof. Julius Ritter von Hauer taught mining and metallurgical engineering, encyclopedic architecture, and building design.

1875
Prof. Karl Habermann
In the academic year 1899/1900, Professor Karl Habermann took over the ‘Chair of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering’ with the corresponding courses in mining and metallurgical engineering. His successor in 1911 was Professor Franz Peter.

1940
Prof. Rudolf Posselt
It was not until Prof. Rudolf Posselt took over the chair in the 1940/41 academic year that it was renamed ‘Chair of General Mechanical Engineering and Mining Machinery’. The courses taught were Machine Elements and Machine Drawing, Fundamentals of Technical Thermodynamics, General Machine Theory, Applied Machine Theory for Mining, Metallurgical Machinery, Welding Technology and Air Raid Protection Seminar. Professor Rudolf Posselt retired in the academic year 1957/58.

1959
Prof. Kurt Bauer
A year later, Professor Kurt Bauer took over and changed the curriculum to include general mechanical engineering, mining machinery and petroleum machinery. In 1964/65, the name of the institute was changed to ‘Chair of Mining and Petroleum Machinery’.
After Professor Kurt Bauer left, the chair remained vacant from 1967 to 1971. During this time, the name was changed to ‘Chair and Institute for Conveyor Technology and Design’ following the introduction of the new field of study ‘Mining Machinery’.

1959
Prof. Klaus Jürgen Grimmer
Professor Klaus Jürgen Grimmer was Director of the Institute of Materials Handling and Design from the 1971/72 academic year until his death in 1998.

1998
Prof. Franz Kessler
From 1998 to 2000, Professor Franz Kessler took over as interim head and was chair of the Department of Materials Handling and Design from 2000 until his retirement in 2017.

2017
Prof. Nikolaus August Sifferlinger
Following Professor Kessler's retirement, the Chair of Conveyor Technology and Design was merged with the Chair of Mining Engineering, Mining Technology and Mining Economics. In 2017, Professor Nikolaus August Sifferlinger took over the management of the remaining part of Conveyor Technology and Design.
