Mission Statement
Our Vision
At the Chair of Mining Engineering and Mineral Economics at the Technical University of Leoben we pursue a clear vision: to be a globally recognized player in shaping the mining industry of the 21st century. Our goal is to play a key role in shaping the future of raw material extraction through innovative and sustainable technologies.
Strategic Direction
To meet the challenges of climate change and increasing competition for resources, we have comprehensively updated our research and teaching strategy. In doing so, we focus on:
- Sustainability and Raw Materials Policy: Sustainability is the focus of our research.
We strive to play an active role in the discourse on raw materials policy and are committed to the responsible procurement and use of mineral raw materials.
- Digitalization and Innovation: Digitalization is an essential part of our work.
We develop new sensors and technologies to make mining processes more efficient and safer. Our goal is to enable comprehensive evaluation and optimization of mining processes through the use of big data and artificial intelligence.
- Undergroud Mining and Rock Mechanics: We focus on the further development of mining methods and the research of geotechnical issues in order to increase safety and efficiency in underground mining.
- Open Pit Mining and Mine Planning: We are continually expanding our expertise in the planning and implementation of open-pit mining projects. Our research focuses on process optimization and minimizing environmental impacts.
- Conveying Technology and Geoinformatics: Innovative solutions in conveying technology and the application of state-of-the-art geoinformation systems are key areas of our research. We are working on the development of efficient mining methods and the use of remote sensing data in mining.
Teaching and Training
Our teaching aims to optimally prepare students for the challenges of the modern mining industry. We place great emphasis on a practical, fundamental engineering education, complemented by specialized content in the areas of digitalization, sustainability, and resource efficiency. We offer numerous opportunities for lifelong learning and strive for high quality and practical applicability of our training.
Cooperations and Networks
We maintain close collaborations with national and international partners from industry, academia and government. These networks enable us to remain at the forefront of research and jointly develop solutions to global challenges.
Future Orientation
Our chair is committed to shaping our research and teaching for the future. We view the transformations in raw material extraction as an opportunity to continuously develop our strategies and make a significant contribution to the sustainable development of the mining industry.
